Growth Habits: Large perennial climbing plant, generally grown as annual, rapidly growing up to 12 to 15 feet tall (3.5-4.5 m); trifoliate leaves, broad-oval leaflets, 4 to 5 inches long (10-12.5 cm).

Propagation: Seeds, after the soil temperature exceeds 50ºF (10ºC).

The pods are edible when young, shorter than 5 inches long (12 cm). The young shelled beans, still pink, can be used as lima beans. The starchy roots and the flowers are also edible. The mature seeds are not generally eaten.

Blooming Habits:
Large scarlet bean-like flowers, up to 1 inch wide (2.5 cm), attractive to the hummingbirds. 'White Dutch Runner' and 'Case Knife' are cultivars with white flowers.

Fruiting Habits:
They don't like the hot weather, and generally stop producing pods when the temperature is above 90°F (32°C). The mature seed is mottled black and red.
