The name 'four wing' refers to the shape of the seed. These seeds are borne in quantities by the female plants. They were ground and used by the natives. Other parts of this shrub have been used also: leaves and young shoots were used in soups and stews, the flowers, and twigs were used to make a yellow dye, and the fruits are edible. The plant is also a fire retardant.
