Growth Habits: Solitary, or slowly offsetting, up to 30 inches tall (75 cm); woolly axils; bluish green triangular tubercles, 4 to 5 inches long (10-15 cm); the areoles is at the tip of the tubercle; 1-2 central spines, up to 4 inches long (10 cm); 8 to 14 radials, up to 2 inches long (5 cm); during very dry seasons, the older tubercles fall.
Watering Needs: Water carefully, lack of water will make the tip of the tubercles yellow. Too much water will make it rot.
Propagation: Seeds, cuttings, offsets

The tubercles go up and get close to each other when the humidity is low to decrease evaporation. They open to increase photosynthesis when the conditions are better. The Leuchtenbergia has a strong tap root and should have a deep pot to accommodate it.

Blooming Habits:
The mature Leuchtenbergia principis has 3 to 4 inches wide (7-10 cm) yellow or pink flower at the tip of the tubercles. They are followed by green smooth fruit. When ripe the bottom of the fruit open and release several hundred large seeds.
