Origin: Circumpolar, in Northern America goes as far south as Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas
Growth Habits: Low, mat-forming shrub, 4 to 16 inches tall (10-40 cm), up to 24 inches (60 cm), foliage is semi-evergreen in mild climate, in coldest parts of its range, much of the foliage dies back to the trunk.
