Origin: Desert belt of North Africa and the Middle East

Growth Habits: Large suckering palm tree, up to 80 feet tall (24 m), up to 25 feet in diameter (7.5 m); trunk with no crownshaft, up to 12 inches in diameter (30 cm); pinnate, gray green leaves

Watering Needs: Moderate water

Propagation: Suckers

Blooming Habits:
Dioecious. Flower stalk coming from among the leaves.

Fruiting Habits:
Reddish, oval to oblong brown fruit, up to 3 inches long (7.5 cm). Brown seed, up to 2 inches long, oval with pointed ends, and a groove on one side.

Propagation:
The seeds germinate easily, and are easy and inexpensive to get… a good seed to experiment with. However a tree from seed can be either sex, and female trees might have astringent, inedible fruit. For this reason, it is probably a wise investment to buy a known tree if you would like to have dates.
